Ice Borehole

Dr. Peter Neff, along with a few other scientists, decided to do an experiment and drop a small piece of ice 90-meters down a borehole on Taylor Glacier, an Antarctic glacier about 54-kilometers long, flowing from the plateau of Victoria Land into the western end of Taylor Valley, north of the Kukri Hills, to see what would happen. They discovered that it made a very cartoon-like sound effect when it reached the bottom. Continue reading for another video and more information.

“Our camp was fascinated by the sound of the ice scraping against the borehole wall, shattering into thousands of pieces and then slamming at once into the bottom of the 90 m-deep hole – sending reverberations back to the surface that likely would have caused hearing damage if you placed your ear directly above the hole,” said Dr. Peter Neff.
