SEGA first launched the Master System in June 1986 (US) -- priced at $200 -- to compete with Nintendo's NES. Unfortunately, the system only managed to sell 125,000 units in its first four months, compared with 2,000,000 NES consoles sold in the same period. Video clips after the jump.
A friend of mine used to have the SEGA Master System.

When I was a kid, my grandparents decided that since they were in Canada and happened to see a really cheap 'sega' they bought it for me for christmas. My parents went out and bought some genesis games for it as well... which they had to quickly return when the actually saw that it was a master system not a genesis. I must say though, the system was amazing. Columns was one of my favorites. All of the remakes of it don't give you enough space, even the genesis version didn't feel right. Though I did actually play a ton of Columns Crown while waiting between classes today.
The best game I had for it was "Golden Axe Warrior". This game seems to have been the 'SErvice GAmes' response to zelda. People talk about golden axe being so great as a side scroller, they never played this game. I still pull it out and play though from time to time. It was amazing. If you have the means, and love classic zelda games, I can't recommend this game enough.
