We have seen the future of portable computing, and it's data tiles. Tagged transparent tiles are used to show dynamic graphical information when placed on a sensor-enhanced display. For those who haven't seen this technology in action, a video clip is provided after the jump.

“I am interested in designing a new human computer interaction style for highly portable computers, that will be situation-aware and assistance-oriented rather than command oriented.” Jun Rekimoto, Director, Interaction Laboratory, Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc.

WOW WO W WOW WOW WOW i want some

That's quite interesting, although not very practical right now. It's major draw back is the physical tiles... other than that it's a very cool idea. I still think the future lies in multi-touch pressure sensitive screens.
4
that is pretty crazy
5
this is amazing....i cant even believe it.

OMG I've seen the future! And it is Sony. Imagine syncing this with system with your laptop, phone, pda, psp AND ps3 by having little tiles for each device. And did anyone see what that video that was streaming to the screen? It was showing a mouse someone using a mouse to pull things off of his laptop and onto the table next to it with a projector!!!!! How crazy is that? An extention of your desktop LITERALLY on your desktop!!!

thats crazy

insane
9
thats fricken awesome!where can i get one?
10
...idk if i should be really impressed or wondering wtf these are gonna do for me? am i gonna be buying massive ammounts of tiles in the future for my tile-computer?

The physical tiles make it impracticle.
12
I like the physical aspect of it... without a little hands-on action obesity in this country would be even worse.
13
I swear I saw this last year through engadget.
14
pretty sick... cept itll be like the second coming of floppy disks..... but MUCH MUCH cooler
15
cool but it looks so unreal, like wow dose it know what you want to do. i think its edit together. a special effect from minorty report.
16
hey 1337, how are tiles impracticle? if you can stack a cd, you can stack a tile you dummy.

I still don't get what those tiles are for. How in the world does all this work? As an electrical engineer I just cannot see enough from this video but I guess that it is just a teaser video. All I do know is that whoever made this is very professional and loves his work.

I love this idea but I agree with Dave, is this going to be a market ploy to make consumers purchase a whole crapload of tiles or are the essential tile going to be included?

the point of this being???

This sort of tile-tablet is ancient. A tablet device like this was shown on BBC's Tomorrow's World years and years ago. All that being said, at the time I thought it was way cool and i wanted one back then. I really dont know why we haven't already seen it.

I have to say that it looks very nice...But is there actually a point to it all? :-O Essentially, what this system appears to involve (IMHO) is glass tiles with RFID chips in them that sit on top of a normal LCD flat-screen. The signal from the RFID chip tells the LCD what kind of tile is sitting where, and displays the relevant information in the chosen part of the screen! I'm sorry...I might have misunderstood part of the concept, but I'm quite certain that I can do exactly the same on a Windows 3.11 desktop! :-P Farewell... :-) >> Death <<
