Sony Responds to Console Price Comparison

Sony responds to their price comparison chart and here is what Dave Karraker (Senior Director of Corporate Communications) has to say:
"Through our comparison chart we are not implying that you must purchase the myriad of peripherals and add-ons that Microsoft offers to play your Xbox 360. You don't. However, if you want to attempt to come close to the performance of the $499 PlayStation 3 by using your Xbox 360, Core or Premium, you could only do that through expensive add-ons -- that is what our chart is demonstrating. Once you add it all up, it would cost you more than our $499 unit, and you would still not come close to everything we offer, ie: free multiplayer gaming, 50GB storage capacity of Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray disc player for games AND movies, processing power of the Cell Broadband Engine."
What are your thoughts on this? I believe their price comparison chart is still quite misleading to say the least. [via Kotaku]

I say Sony is playing it dirty, and they're shaking in their boots because they see that the hardcore gamer market is ruled by Microsoft, and the rest by Nintendo.

it would have been different if Sony made a true comparison, using the 360 premium package, adding possibly 2 years of paying for online play, as well as the additional cost of the HD drive (not as a necessity, but an option). But instead they took the general gaming public as dupes who would barely glance at their comparison and shout in unison "Boy! That Sony PS3 sure beats the heck out of XBox just on price alone! It must rock!" Now their going back, creating excuses for why they put it this way in the first place. Nice try, Sony. Prove it in the package, not the price,

Hal. 75% of the console market has been ps2 for the last few years. They have ran the show. With 360, ms is doing better, but they are done 1.3 billion since launch. They are struggling to make xbox work. Also 360 graphics look last gen compared to the ps3. Personally I'm a PC gamer so I won't use either.

I agree blu-ray= beta or 8-track. It's all mudslinging politics between the major game companies now. The worst thing is that the ps3 would become another Zodiac if Sony didn't have cash. The majority of heavyweight developers are jumping on board with either 360 or both. Very few are only associating themselves with ps3 alone. We'll all see where the console wars lead in the next few years.

I don't see how anyone is being misled. It's pretty obvious to me that the PS3 includes a lot out of the box that the xBox does not. I've seen lots of price comparisons like this. You have to be an idiot to think that they are implying you MUST buy these options on the other systems. If you don't want it or need it you don't have to fork out the extra cash. God knows I hate Sony products, but this was just a simple comparison with other gaming systems. Cut Sony some slack.

Even if Blu_ray = Betamax you must remember that alone it'll still play our video games and many movies that is out already. PS3 is worth it even without the BluRay player. Subtract the Hdplayer from the 360 and you still are getting a good price. The only reason why Sony is clarifying this is because fanboys and news reporters everywhere assumed Sony was saying that you had to buy that. When this was totally untrue, I'm glad Sony clarified this, and people still complain.

I have to agree I think DVDs hold the market just as VHS did back in the 80's and as consumers we are not going to be willing to switch to BLU RAY like they tried to get us to change to BETA MAX. But that is besides the point here. The point is Sony is just giving a opinion. They believe that their out of the box PS3 can only compare to XBox if you buy the extras for XBox. I don't think they are scared, as already stated in another comment, Sony has controlled the market and I for one think they will continue to. If I buy the PS3 it will not be for the BLU RAY capability it will be for the gaming. I didn't buy my PS2 to be a DVD player.

I can go and buy a X360. I can't buy a PS3 in germany so far. So all of this is theory. The day I can buy a PS3 here (and MS needs to consider reacting to that) I take a look at the price lists. Not that I'm going to buy a console anyway.

It's not a miscomprehension of the chart, its the whole principle of the idea that Sony and Microsoft have the most irritating rivalry. When I said blu-ray=betamax, I meant that this is just going to be another useless media type created by sony to try to give sony lovers a more intimate association with their system. 360 still makes games with the 4.7gig DVD's and does fine. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disks are even packaged in the same style cases, just in different colors. For the people who love blu-ray, isn't it pointless to claim the greatness of the disks when most games produced can fit just fine on a dvd? Who cares about storage on a blu-ray or hd-dvd, it'd take inordinate amounts of time to burn it. This is so frustruating, why can't there be one disk for every friggin' thing, try sticking a UMD in something other than psp and you'll know what I mean.

If you are sooo worried about power just get a computer and find and emulator. of which in the long run will probably cheaper and you'll probably get better performance.
