According to MacDailyNews, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer "blamed the pirates in China, India, Brazil, Russia and other emerging markets" for poor Windows Vista sales. What do you think?
Farrell reports, "He said that there was software within Windows Genuine Advantage which could be dialled up by [Microsoft] to make it even more tougher for the pirates to take out... Of course he is ignoring the fact that a lot of people are not buying Vista because it does not offer much more than XP and Windows Genuine Advantage makes their lives a misery. Cranking up WGA might backfire."

It sold few copies because it sucked...not because of pirates. Anyone who pirates your software weren't going to buy it in the first place
2
I've recieved four free copies of Vista through various legitimate means. I've installed none of them. They think it's piracy?
3
"make it even more tougher"??? With grammar like that can we really trust the people reporting on these things? And it's not the pirates, it's Microsofts crap service and stupid invasive software that is a big part of Vista not selling. The only thing is really offers is DX10 anyway, which isn't used at all yet.

...Or maybe it's just because the only decent version costs $400?
6
I would go with the price and that past record suggest that people should wait until (at least) sp1 comes out before attempting to use it...
7
You would have to be insane to recommend upgrading to Vista right now. Once programs are updated and it's working smoothly I would probably recommend it to my family as long as it's security works better than XP. I hate having to clean people's computers up every few weeks.

If Balmer wasn't one of Gate's mates from college we wouldn't have his annoying stupidity inflicted on us via the media constantly. The guy is a dick, plain and simple. Now he's inventing these "third world pirates" to blame poor sales on. It's because it's a just released product (read: bugs) with no real advantages, at a huge price. The price is doubly inflated when people realise that they are forced to upgrade their PC in order to run Vista. How can such a huge company with so many resources constantly mess up like this?
9
I thought Microsoft had all kinds of anti piracy crap placed in Vista and that activation was required. Or maybe it is because it costs too much and updates to computers to run the OS costs lots of money.

wrong. mass pirating sprung when the internet got very popular and ISP's started bringing in more faster internet services. Thus springing more pirating. Back in the day, when there were no Cd-burners or DVD-Burners, there was no other way to get software besides buying it. Now you can get anything off the internet. Microsoft is having the same issue as music producers have. If people didn't pirate Vista, then gauranteed, it will sell more. As a matter of fact, people compare the beta with the final release. Sure its slow at one point, only if your a complete newbie at computers. I disabled all the useless services in my Vista Ultimate and now I run games fine. Im using an integrated Geforce 6100 too! The most important thing you have to remember is that when it comes to vista, make sure you install the right one, and make sure you have sufficient resources. People say Oh my god! 1 GB RAM! are you kidding me?!.... Suck it up princess, this is 2007. not 2000. Your 128 mb of RAM was godly back then, but get out of your hippy suit and upgrade! XP back in the day was considered crap. Know why? because it was slow, but we didnt have sufficient resources to run such a powerful operating system! Now its happening with Vista! Everyone, dont be sad. Technology is rapidly rising, and that AMD opteron that you were eyeing is a peice of sh*t in the next few weeks/months, and it will cut down in price.

Hasn't MS been addressing the piracy issue for the last five years? XP activation? Windows Validation to get updates? WGA? For Ballmer to say this makes me think that they haven't done it well enough. Or at all. Vista won't sell because it's garbage. There's not that much new in it and what is there requires you to upgrade hardware to use. Personally, if I had bought a Dell PC last year and the best thing I could run on it was Home Basic I'd be really ticked off. The Aero Glass interface requires a dedicated video processor with at least 256 MB RAM. Last time I checked, every PC Dell sells has the video processor integrated into the motherboard and therefore shares memory with the rest of the system. For those of us who build our own, motherboards without integrated video are getting harder to find.

Umm, maybe it's because Windows sucks? If you wanna blame something on the pirates, how bout blaming them for the improvements. Windows has always been a broken OS and has more scars and bandaids to make it work decent enough. But still I get calls several times a week from family members asking me to sort out some problems. Mine never gives me trouble but thats because of 10 years of experience with Windows. People should wake up and realize that Windows is crap and refuse to buy it. Maybe then the software companies will migrate to what people want, a reliable OS. Mac is good but too damn expensive for most people. Linux is damn good and should have more commercial software support.

Piracy? I'm a brazilian. And let me say: No one want windows vista nor its 'non-genuine' copy. I think only microsoft-fanboys and compulsive buyers are going to pick this mess. Yes, just those, because the aliened students - some called microsoft student ambassadors - got the system already from microsoft for free. Should i say that the non-limited version, the 'ultimate full', is really expensive?

After years of delays (despite many majors cutbacks to features - I was really looking forward to that Unix-style file structure) Microsoft have delivered a big, bloated, system-resource-hogging dud. It provides no great improvements over XP, but instead binds everything up with insane DRM. For this, you get charged a fortune. ...but nobody is buying it because we're all pirating it. Sheer arrogance. Sounds like excuses to placate the shareholders... "No, really! It's great and everyone loves it, but it's all those pesky pirates' fault!"

I would if i could only install it on a static hardware setup. "How many computers can I install Vista on? You are only allowed one install per copy of Vista, with the following conditions: OEM: It's tied to the PC it's first installed on. You get one major upgrade and a number of minor upgrades." Not that i will be swapping over any time soon.

Im using an integrated Geforce 6100 (128mb shared) and running aero glass perfectly fine! oh... and you can still use a motherboard with integrated video, once you install a dedicated graphics card... it stops sharing your RAM... If you were someone who builds comps... then you'd know what your talking about... unfortunately you don't.

Dont believe me that I cant run an integrated geforce 6100?? Look. I put it in 3D view for all to see aeroglass works on a crappy integrated card with 128MB of shared RAM http://two.xthost.info/ricdamsel/Aero.jpg

[...] Ballmer blames weak Vista sales on pirates. [...]

that's BS, nobody bought it cuz it sux, windows xp works just fine anyways, most people who get pirated stuff wouldn't buy the real thing anyways

Vista is a bloated update to XP. The DRM, WGA and other "features" are a joke. It does nothing except kill any usability the OS might have had. Way to go MS, rearrange the whole OS without changing anything, lock it down real tight....maybe people will believe it's something new and exciting. I refuse to buy a copy of this excuse for an OS. Linux and Sun OS have the same capabilities and functionality without the cost. MS has ripped off the looks of Mac OS (again) and labeled it as "new". My entire home network is being converted to Linux and Mac as I replace each PC and laptop.
