How about a chair (remote controlled) that can put itself back together? That's right, the D'Andrea Group has created a nifty robotic chair that can break apart -- for easy transportation -- and reconstruct itself within two minutes. Video clip after the jump.

Another one of those things that just belongs in the "why...?" category..

why would you want a chair that falls appart, on purpose, than puts itself back togeather, i think its a waste of time

its nice but it doesnt show you the acual process of how it finds each of the legs and back rest. i think that, that process is more important then showing the legs getting sqrewed into the chair.

That thing looks about as comfortable as the ones I say in during the 4th grade.. and how often does one transport an uncomfortable chair around?

I think this company would have been better off to make something along of the lines of a self-building robot for the military or something...
good idea (sell-assemble)
stupid idea (its a chair)

all you people who are saying it wasn't worth it, I disagree!!
Its very worth while indever.
This goes a long way to developing other self asembly products.
You have to learn to crawl before you can walk remember.
getting a self building robot to work right now is like stuffing your mouth full and as hard as a brick, You will never actually get to eat it! Take a small bite and you will enjoy it!

It seems to me as if the video jumps on the close-up when one of the leggs gets screwed onto the chair. As if it didnt manage to do it on its own, and someone pause the recording and fixed it.

This has no real world produictivity. All it really does is promote people to be more and more lazy.

i think all your people are pretty much 'down-to-earth' minded.
It's a really funny and poetic realisation for a technology advance. like someone said, 'you have to crawl before you can walk', and beside, i even like the esthetic of that chair.
like art, things are not always usefull, but the reaction they generate on people make us learn a lot about our society.
Well done, and to finish, what would happen with four chairs and a table getting disembled at the same time ?

Pointless. Waste of time, money, and chair parts. They should put those creative minds to solving real problems.

Until the day when designers can come up with a car that can remove its four tires independently, also without any reason or problem solving application, this kind of breakthrough won't be appreciated. LOL What a complete waste of time, energy, and resources. I had a good laugh though.
For your next challenge
What would it take to design something that shouldn't come apart in the first place....hmmm...like a chair? LOL

Doesn't look very comfortable to sit on, and I'll bet it weighs like 40 pounds. Not too portable, I'll say.

It's remote controlled and therefore not a robot. Robots by definition are autonomous, able to function without human interaction. This is an amusing machine, nothing more.

I think some of you are really missing the point here. It's not about the fact that its a chair, it's about being able to reconstruct itself, and developing the idea from there, pretty clever really!
