The Velocipede

The black and yellow Velocipede is the world's first human powered vehicle with an ultra strong carbon fiber monocoque chassis. Designed by Michael Goretzky, this vehicle weighs only 60 lbs. and has two forward 20" wheels, perfect for those twisties. You'll find a "slipstream airfoil shape" cockpit and recumbent seat on the inside. Now here's the real shocker, it costs $13,999.95.

Bad in hot weather, good for wind resistance, limited to body types, unsure of maintanence issues, narrow wheels limited to pristine road conditions...but it's a good start. A plastic body, with solar panels, air slots, roominess, electric motor, plug-in power, using Lithium batteries...it could make a good sub 100lbs commuter pod.

There are LOTS of great three-wheeled recumbents on the market that would run rings around this, at prices between $2500 and $6000. Too heavy! I've ridden a two-wheeled recumbent for years, and can attest to the comfort, egonomics, and other benefits of these bikes, and a enclosed bike is faster for a serious rider. It's no accident that all HPV speed records are owned by recumbents.
