A shipping container is a contraption with strength suitable to withstand shipment, storage, and handling. These range from large reusable steel boxes used for intermodal shipments to the ubiquitous corrugated boxes. Their invention made a major contribution to the globalization of commerce in the second half of the 20th century, dramatically reducing the cost of transporting goods and hence of long-distance trade. Most of the time, they're used purely for transport, but as you've seen here and other places, they're great for living too. The example above is located in San Jose, Costa Rica and was made from two 40-foot shipping containers on a budget of just $40,000. Continue reading for more pictures.
