David Nadlinger of the University of Oxford managed to win The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) national science photography competition with this entry, titled “Single Atom in an Ion Trap”. What you’re looking at above is a single atom captured between two metal electrodes placed 2mm apart using a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, extension tubes, and two flash units with color gels.
