No, you aren’t looking at James Bond’s secret cave from an upcoming film, but rather Pionen, a real-life data center. On interesting fact about Pionen is that it was a former civil defense center built in the White Mountains in Stockholm, Sweden in the 1970s to protect essential government functions from nuclear strike. Pionen was transformed into a data center by Bhanof, a Swedish Internet service provider. Since it’s inside of a mountain, secured by a 40-centimeter thick door, and only reachable by an entrance tunnel, the data center is capable of withstanding a hydrogen bomb. On the interior, you’ll find fountains, greenhouses, simulated daylight and a huge salt water fish tank. Plus, it uses actual submarine engines as backup power generators.
