Michael Hansmeyer and Benjamin Dillenburger have created the world’s first 3D printed room. This 11-ton installation boasts 260-million surfaces, and stands nearly 11-feet-tall by 52-feet-wide. Inspired by historic temples and architectural fragments, the room was printed in large chunks over a month, and then pieced together in a single day. “The complicated program used to design the ornate room, which echoes the detailing of the Baroque period, is based on an algorithm developed by Hansmeyer. The algorithm can be used to produce the general form of the room, as well as the ‘micro-textures’ that make of the uber-detailed surfaces throughout the room fragments. Recent advances in 3D printing technology have enabled large scale projects like this 3D printed room to come to fruition. Instead of using restrictive printing materials, the architects printed the room using a combination of sand and a bonding agent. When completed, the material has properties similar to sandstone,” according to Inhabitat.
