Top 5 High-Tech Guns

Our editors have compiled a list of five high-tech guns (or gun-equipped devices) for your enjoyment. If we happened to miss any, please leave us a comment. "Continue reading" for the list.

Honorable Mention - .22-Caliber Knife Gun

So you've seen the .22-caliber cell phone gun, now check out G.R.A.D., a .22-caliber knife gun.
G.R.A.D. .22 RS Knife gun. holds 5 .22 cal bullets in a revolver type loader. fires with every pull of the trigger on the handle

5. Cornershot

The Cornershot is a "revolutionary weapon system that enables military and law enforcement to effictively observe/engage targets from around the corner/behind cover without exposing any part of the operator's body ".

4. Autocopter Gunship

The Autocopter Gunship (developed by Neural Robotics) " is a self-stabilized unmanned mini-helicopter that can be used as an aerial platform in the sky" or weapon.

3. .22-Caliber Cell Phone Gun

As cool as it is ingenious, the Cell Gunphone will give security officials even more to worry about. On the outside, it looks like any other cell phone, but lying beneath the exterior is a .22-caliber pistol that's capable of firing four rounds in rapid succession. Twist the phone, load up the top half with .22-caliber bullets, and fire away using keys 5-8.

2. Samsung's $200,000 Machine Gun Sentry Robot

Samsung has partnered with Korea University to develop a machine-gun equipped sentry robot, which consists of "two cameras: one for day-time and one for infrared night vision, zooming capabilities, a speaker for notifying the intruder, sophisticated pattern recognition to detect the difference between humans/trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun."
...are expected to sell for $200,00 USD and will be available late in 2007. The South Korean government plans to deploy these friendly reminders on the border between South and North Korea, to further ease relations between the countries

1. Metal Storm Weapons: Million-Plus Rounds Per Minute

O'Dwyer constructed a triple-barrel, a nine-barrel, and a 36-barrel firing prototype design that he lovingly named Bertha. "The reason for the 36 barrels was simply to indicate to ourselves and to others the future versatility of this system, in that with the 36 barrels we had 540 rounds on board and, based on the 45,000-round-per-minute rate per barrel, that gave us a maximum firing rate of 1.62 million rounds per minute," the inventor says [Source]

AWESOME list! My favorite is the Samsung Robot

the metal storm weapons are pretty neat-o

That metal storm video makes it all look very simple, scientific, clever, fun, and reliable. But it really does not look that realistic, how can that yellow propellant be added between bullets, that may cost quite a bit in manufacturing. What about the _electronically controlled firing_: it looks very hard to ignite a single density of propellant powder! That F18 computer controlled firing computer seems very capable, but calculating exactly WHEN to fire, WHAT to fire, WHAT to fire ON, WITH what FORCE to fire on, EXACTLY WHEN THE PLANE COMES OVER HEAD!! I really doubt that precision, it is extremely difficult to do those calculations with EXACT precision with digital computers as we civilians know (maybe the militia has something), the human brain is only very close to be being able to with experience do something like that. That handheld pistol looks particularly nice. But the uses for it in civilian use are kinda kool, like the firework flag and the pesticide helicopter (quite expensive for just using the century old sprayplane) But with all being said, it is the coolest thing from the American Forces as I have seen(possibly with the exception of Lockheed Martin Skunkwork SR-71 Skybird)

re: pyro's comment, Metal Storm is actually Austrilian in origin. Caseless ammo in ur ref has been around since the 60's(Daisy V/L 22 rifle). Metal Storm is more akin to Navy's rail gun in concept, http://www.military.com/soldiertech/0,14632,Soldiertech_RailGuns,,00.html than the caseless ammo proposed in US army's advance combat rifle program, 1986.

war stuff. brrrr.

"Metalstorm" seems all well and good, but they fail to mention what happens if an EMP blast is set off within the area. Unless it's amazingly well shielded, as with any electronics, one can assume the whole assembly be rendered useless as soon as an EMP fries its circuits.
7
metal storm looks pretty simple and i do not see how it could possible be a challenge for any computer to calculate. human finds target , says fire, it compensates for speed, gravity, wind, direction, etc etc etc... and zap. your toast.

so if my enemy is using those superior metal storm weapons I just have to throw a simple emp bomb and I won the war?

So tired of hearing about Metalstorm. Cyclic rates-of-fire in excess of 1.62 million rpm are NO GOOD if you have to throw away the entire barrel assembly after it is expended. Generally, the lethality of a weapon is made by the ballistic and explosive characteristics of its rounds, not its ability to deliver them at absurdly high speeds. Why fire 500 9mm rounds in a split second when you can simply fire a single 155mm round instead? And a note about EMP weapons - according to Global Security, while non-nuclear EMP weapons do exist, their ranges are rather small - 200m for a 2,000lb munition. Military electronics are generally hardened against EMP effects, anyway.

Another thought, upon fully watching the video and seeing the F/A-18 "demonstration", which suggests multiple overflights over a "missile site". (I'm not even going to address the made-up avionics, which is just hilarious.) Why not simply use existing hardware? A trio of 500lb GPS-guided JDAMS bombs could take out the targets on a single overflight, or better yet, with a lofted or high-altitude delivery that minimizes the aircraft's chances of being engaged by the target.

The printer cartridge didn't kill anyone so far and I doubt metal storm will do either. The gun is like a rocket engine and action/reaction law of Dynamics says recoil will be embarrassing, unless they aim to send the fighter to orbit... Now seriously, the real problem is the low barrel velocity I foreseen (that's why they fire it vertically - to be helped by gravity) and lack of precision to hit a target at a decent distance, i.e. reduced inflicted damage.

The whole thing is like a rocket engine and the recoil will be embarrassing unless they aim to send the F18 to orbit, according to the action/reaction law of Dynamics. Now seriously, I foresee a very low barrel velocity which means a lack of hit precision at a decent distance and almost no inflicted damage to the target. I think the inventor is still involved in the printers industry.

hello. it's a nice day for your ideas and our money

Well, Metal Storm looks like crap to me. What about recoil? And shouldn't loading take a long time? Refilling gigantic barrels? Oh, and the F-18 idea sucks. Alot. How the hell do you reload that? And, what happened to the missiles? It's not like a pilot's gonna fly over an enemy base without any weaponry other than a bunch of downward pointing guns. And of course, they also ignore enemy SAMs, anti-air defenses, and enemy planes. So, in conclusion,I hate Metal Storm.

Err, Metal Storm is Australian made, not US made. Oh, and it's been around for the last 10 years. As for all you wannabes talking about EMP blasts etc, how many EMP blasts have been used in the last 25 years ? None. You've all been playing too much MGS...get a grip.
