Toshiba's Micro Hard Drive

Measuing only 0.85-inches in diameter, this new hard drive from Toshiba opens up new possibilites in mobile storage. Slightly larger than a postage stamp, you could be seeing this technology in cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and more.
"Mounting dimensions are 0.94x1.26-inches, with a thickness of 0.197-inches. The drive uses 0.12-Watts in standby and 0.60-Watts during write operations. Running on 3.0-Volts over the 0° to 70°C temperature range, it has one platter, two heads, and a 3600rpm rotational speed."

thats sweet, though if its just 4 gigs, it cheaper and more efficient to run the flash drives, as iv seen some poeple post this would be wonderfull for apple, you may notice the nano is 4 GB, of flash, allowing for a smaller battery and smaller composure, if they get this HD to at least 10 gigs, then were talking!

Very Nice, but with a 36Gb Flash drive from Samsung at twice the speed of a mec drive, they better be cheap. Using them in a PDA maybe, but they won't do for anything requiring shock resistance. BH

Thats 1 cool 4GB-HD. Cant wait till i get a new phone upgrade with one of those in! ^_^

Hmm, Korean money, I guess either they had nothing else to show (seems unlikely), or a Korean coin is bigger than a Japanese or American one??

Here are the stats on that drive. http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=818200000007000000010000659800001516/818200000b00000000010000659c000026ae/8182000008e2000000010000659c000027a0/818200000c4b000000010000659c00002c17/818200000c4c000000010000659c00002c19

I agree, very cool but not practical.

No, even if it does get to 10 gigs, it's not really showing anything new except small size. It's only 3600RPM the seek time on a drive that slow that's like 10 gigs would be greatly increased.
19
Yeah, it couldn't be that that's what they had in their pockets or anything. The 100 Won coin is 24mm in diameter. I'll leave it to internet geniuses to figure out what that is in the measurements they have in their pockets.
20
I would expect the seek time to be minimal based on the physical size of the device (moving the head from cylinder to cylinder - think of a cross section of a tree trunk). The RPM speed would effect the transfer rate - how fast the data moves past the head for read / write. I would like to have a few of these for RAID 5 on a Gumstix. Sweet!
21
Actually seek time is inversly poportional to RPM. average seek time = 1/(2RPM) so it would be rather slow at 3600RPM
