USB Floppy Disk Striped RAID

What should you do with a bunch of old external floppy drives and USB hubs? You RAID them of course. More after the jump.

OUR SETUP: * iBook G3/700MHz * 384 MB of RAM * Running OX 10.4.3 * 13 VST Floppy Drives * 6 USB 1.1 Hubs (Not all ports were used though)"

It can be used for fast writing files on a drive. In this case, floppies. It devides the data in 13 streams enabling all the drives to write at the same time. All though, I don't think you would acheive fast speeds even with 40 floppy drives...

I think they've created the entire computer's RAM out of external floppy drives, as opposed to the single circuit board that's usually inside the machine.

What it does , and waht it means is not important. This is just a neat use of old dead and dumb stuff. Simple an excellent use of an idea for the fun of it...BRAVO

Well, it got a good idea making all of them to RAID. But look at the mess! Full of wire!?! I wont feel confortable with it and one slightly mistake move might pull down everything.

tim, your wrong... in a raid setup, it uses numerous drives to act as one, so in essence, those floppies are acting as 1 drive...

If they're actually using it as a true RAID, it's usually used for backing up files but I assume it could be used for regular memory as well.

Interesting...If one fails your in bad shape though. Time for a rack mount for the lot. I could see portable USB cards stuck in the hubs next. 1GB per stick, looks like 20 or so hubs at 3 per, 60 gig of mini drives... Nice work.

I bet when you replace the disks you gotta remember which order to put them back in... sounds fun but who ends up with that many of the same drive? maybe they "fell" off the back of a truck.

Wow, lotsa clueless comments.. RAID lets you combine seperate disks into one logical unit, either for performance, reliability, scaling size, or a combination of those factors. The second screenshot shows it's a "striped RAID set", meaning it combines all the disks together into one large volume (for increased storage size and performance, but not reliability). There is no proactical application for this. A $5 flash drive would store more and be a lot faster. This is obviously just a cool hack, just to do something with old hardware, to prove it can be done.

I wanna know what buddy was smoking when he came upon that idea... screw the non usefullness, or the fact that you would have to switch all 13 floppy disks to get a freash drive and when you put them back they have to be in the same order. The fact of the matter is that here someone has taken an Idea and modified it to suit their own hypothesis. For that they get a gold star!

Well, we all are missing the fact that the picture says the storage space is 17.5 mb!!! Now, the cool trick would be to string together a bunch of zip drives. haha or maybe not.
