Larry Neal, a former test pilot, created this flying motorcycle "called the Super Sky Cycle " -- "a cross between a motorcycle and an autogyro". Video after the jump.
The flying bike goes as fast as 70 mph in the air and 60 mph on the road, and sells for around $25 grand!

Wow... news from 1969. Hundreds of Bensen Gyrocopters have already been built: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/air_power/ap32.htm

A "gyrocopter" has a powered rotor right? and wings? this has neither. the rotor spins when you move forward and thats what creates lift, it is not connected to a motor at all. So to me, this looks like a pretty new concept. In any case its cool, i dont know how practical, but cool non the less.

If its a super lightweight craft, I belive you don't need a liscense to fly it (as with most gyrocopters).

Shouldn't the propeller be enclosed in some type of cage for street use? I can't see how it would be street legal without a cage; anything that touches the blade is either going to be chopped off or shatter the blade and send shard flying in all directions. It would be negligent not to have some form of protective device around it. Or, why not have some form of chain drive to the rear wheels that can be deactivated when the prop is in use, and a clutch to the prop that disengages when the rear wheels are in use? It may cost a little more but it would make the entire thing a little more practical. The whole concept is nothing more than a novelty. He may sell a few, but it's going to go the same way as the prop driven flying cars of the past.

It's a gyrocopter, plain and simple. And as with all "flying cars", it's really just a roadable aircraft. The notion of being able to take off from a highway (to jump over traffic-jams) is complete fantasy. The current global system of air-traffic control does not appreciate those kinds of antics. Probably a good thing too, or seeing these contraptions dangling from overhead powerlines (with a skeleton in the cockpit) could become a familiar sight on our highways...
