GM's Hy-Wire is touted as the first drivable concept to combine a hydrogen fuel cell with by-wire technology. On the inside, you'll find "a single unit called X-drive that is easily set to either a left or right driving position" -- allowing steering, braking, and other functions to be controlled electronically rather than mechanically. Video after the jump.
"The design is built around the fact that there is no engine compartment; the vehicle is very open from front to rear. This is intentional to highlight the openness in the interior and the range of possibilities."
Now THAT, is some space age looking s***!
However it does sound like a golf cart going up hill with a fat man driving at what seems to be like 30mph...
cool.

Neat-o, but the idea of gass and brake with you hands will take a while to catch on.

It runs by electronics instead of mechanics. So no giant engine and tons of junk to clutter it up.
I think I would hate the accelerater on the steering wheel though. Especially the brake. That would take some serious getting used to.

All of the engine components are in the "skateboard" looking thing the car is riding on... Would anyone else have a problem trusting a car that is run entirely electronically?

I think the lack of noise is a welcome change... I can only imagine the damage that years of driving in my car has caused my ears...
the idea of the accelerators on the wheel... will take some getting used to. but I'd get used to it.

I don't like the idea of depending on Electronics to
break and steer. I rather have than in manual with
electronic support. Couple of times my steering
wheel went HyWire in my Caddy, for a moment there
I thought my car got possesed.

Interesting topic... I'm working in this industry myself and I don't agree about this in 100%, but I added your page to my bookmarks and hope to see more interesting articles in the future
