Despite the rumors/videos, New York Times columnist David Pogue attempts to prove that Microsoft did not rip-off OS X. We think the similarities are quite obvious. Microsoft definitely needs to go back to the drawing board for Vista SP2. What are your thoughts? Video after the jump.

Im glad they copied it. I love the little extras that OS X is known for. Now I can enjoy them on a PC while playing any video game i want.
2
I don't understand the haters, saying that Vista is a total OSX rip off! Leave M$ alone, they changed the details, so what more do you want from them? LEAVE VISTA ALONE!!

Why this tool even needed to make this clip is beyond me. Anyone thinking that some if not all of these ideas didn't come from Apple and their developers has their head up their arses. What a spurious distinction to make... spotlight in the top right corner, and windows search in the bottom left? please. try harder, you silly bastard. really. Mac OS'es and their associated hardware have always been charged at a premium price relative to Microsoft's offerings. This is for many reasons, but the one I identify most quickly is that Apple is only producing for a smaller, up-market portion of the community, and their scale lends them the ability to develop and introduce new features much faster than the lumbering behemoth that is Microsoft. They also listen to their customers (*cough*windowsgenuineadvantage*cough*), and give them what they ask for in a timely fashion.

Everytime Microsoft comes out with a new version of Windows there is this same dispute: Windows borrowed from Mac OS X What a crock. There will always be similarities because users demand the same functionality. I am a huge Apple fan, and i can't stand Microsoft. But this debate is tired and stupid. To the dip that claims Apple charges a premium for it's hardware because it is selling to an up-scale market, you need to do the math. That myth has been dispelled time and time again...

response to: 'To the dip that claims Apple charges a premium for it’s hardware because it is selling to an up-scale market, you need to do the math. That myth has been dispelled time and time again…' Can you show me where that information is, instead of simply taking up a contrary position with no information? And I don't get your point about the math. They ARE selling up-market, their hardware DOES cost more than a similarly spec'ed PC, and the OS has a history of being used by professionals from all kinds of fields. I would say with that in mind that the first-buyers of this technology aren't going to be mums and dads.

Buddha, I think the guy is being sarcastic. M$ have always done this, the widgets are also found on linux, and far as i knew started on linux? I don't think that looking the same is a problem (people like it, why change it), its when the code, images... are the same.
8
@Buddha's first comment: Are you serious? Do you not get that this video is sarcasm? Or am I too drunk to realise that you're being so subtley sarcastic back at it?
9
this guy is a dumbass. Period.
10
LOL! I love this guy! Not the same thing!!!
11
::speaking sarcaticly:: I told you that vista isn't a copy off. who would think that ms would do such a thing. come on people even this guy from New York Times tells the difference between the 2, the search engine might be exactly the same but there located in Different places, arguement closed
12
Alright, so that guy was a completely sarcastic tool who really didn't need to do that, but more to the point; whilst his points on the calendar, etc were valid - the search thing was not. If he'd done his research he'd have seen that search in vista being important was long in planning; ever since the earliest builds of longhorn. If anyone copied anyone there it was apple, and they got it out quicker, so fair dos to them! I really think this argument is tired, stupid and childish tbh. Let the consumer decide and leave it.
13
" its not the same thing, its on the bottom left of the screen instead of the top right oooooo its in a diff spot but its still a copy
14
They all stole the GUI OS from Xerox to begin with.
15
haha, that was funny :D
16
And there goes again that "oooh it has a mouse interface, you click on menus and buttons, it must be copied from Apple" thing.. "They" didn't even invent it to begin with, and "they" are borrowing ideas from everyone else, just like everyone else is doing. You just can't reinvent the wheel all the time. I don't see Honda saying "Hey you General Motors and Ford, your cars drives pretty much the same as ours, you're copying us!" When someone has a great idea, be sure its going to be everywhere else eventually. I can't wait to see "them" saying "oooh they're copying our XLG 3D interface"..
17
This is an absolute riot! I love the serious sarcasm! I fell out of my seat! I love that comment "Its not in the top right, its in the bottom left!" more more more
18
LoL, Microsoft was stealing ideas from macintosh since the first windows :D Macintosh has the window managing system first, and than microsoft came and copied that :D I'm using windows because Mac is unupgradable... I mean you can't put a better graphics card into a mac =P (Or I'm just thinking of previous macs?) PC is the most suitable for me :)

Oh wow, just because Microsoft has introduced some new visual effects and the searching doesn't mean Vista is a copy of OSX 10. Yeah they found those what 5 things useful and implemented them into Vista. OMFG they must have hacked into Apple stolen the source code and made a new UI and released it as Vista. Yeah im sure the 15 million lines of code and 5 years in the making was just for those 5 little crappy things which they copied from Apple. In this day and age, if you release something, it will be copied and implemented. People should really get over this crap, its just so immature it's not funny.
20
I think that guy was pointing out the similarities on purpose to make it seem like Microsoft was copying it. Sort of like Stephen Colbert taking the side of the republicans to make their ideas look foolish.
21
That's really the name of business. Looking at what works (already out there or not) and making it better. People who hate microsoft are really just jealous. Is it perfect, no but nothing is so give it up
22
Ok, wow so vista ripped off some crappy little search thing, widgets, and a crappy chess app. You know what Vista can do... Vista can play video games... all of them. Pwned case closed.
23
Well, it's already been said, but I'll say it too: calling one thing or another "copying" is a ridiculous idea when it comes to technology. All advances build on all previous advances, even if they're by some other company. Should Microsoft (or Apple) reinvent the wheel every time they want to produce a new product? No, that would be stupid and inefficient. When you're creating a product, you look at the entire market and see what features your competitors have that you want to use and you implement them. It's not copying, it's progress. It's not like Vista ONLY has features that OS X has. It has plenty of its own innovative things too. And as a personal note, I hate the OS X interface, and I love the Vista interface, so they can't be TOO similar.
24
This guy is gay and he says that Microsoft isn't copying them b/c of little technicalities that really don't make a difference, everyone knows that vista is a cop out of OS X and Vista is three years too late b/c Microsoft can't come up w/o anything original except for viruses and crappy cheap computers.

gee! what a suprising level of intelligence by the comment posters on that topic. low in fact. youngsters who play game and don't know much about compagnies and computer. keeps on playin game little boyz. its funny that apple, who has not 5% of the computer market can even scare and shock the pc game geek audience on this site. lame. and ho! history boyz! history. apple is not only copied by micro$oft but is an inspiration for everything technology. i'll keep my mac that does pc 2 whenever needed.
