So you've seen the new PlayStation 3 controller, which features X-Y-Z, pitch/roll/yaw, lateral motion detection, and Bluetooth for wireless play -- but unfortunately no rumble functionality. Now see it in action. Video after the jump.
wow that looks awesome. I cant decide between the Wii-mote and the ps3 controller though :'( whats the point of even going to E3 if you can just watch movies that people upload?

just a sidenote..
the ps3 controller functions as seen on the video.. its kind of like a built in gyro.. but the wiimote can distinguish where it is in 3-dimensional space. also, because of the way the ps3 controller works, they cant add vibration without messing it up. the wiimote has vibration and built in speakers

F you Sony, for stealing from Nintendo.
It is VASTLY inferior to the Wiimote, though.

vastly inferior?
Because of spatial sensitivity? Give me a break. No one ever complains that the PS2 controller was difficult to use, or uncomforable, unlike the xbox monstrocity or gamecube's.
nunchucks for a controller? Yeah, that's an improvement.
And if playstation STOLE anything, where's the lawsuit?? This is business, if sony was guilt of anything, nintendo would sue.

Forgot to mention. Vibration sucks. I'm couldn't be happier it's gone.

That looks pretty cool. If the motion response is really accurate it will open a door to a whole new style of games. I cannot think of any examples at the moment but I dont get paid to. ha ha... sux about losing the vibrations though. Maybe for FPS games they'll make an external device you can attach when the motion sensor isnt needed.

and your supposed to aim HOW?
at least with the Wiimote you can AIM.
way to go sony, taking someone elses idea and ruining it...
yay for xbox 360 and Wii!

It may not have as good motion sensing as the Wii controller but it's also a regular controller so it wouldnt even matter if it was broken and they wanted to use that for PSP and PS2 but they didnt have the right technology so its not copying Wii.

THIS IS NOT GOING TO TAKE OFF! It'll be fun for about a second, then I'm certain consumers will ditch the motion-sensing nonsense. Go on, just pretend you have the controller in your hand now and you're playing that flying game...you look like an idiot and you'll be tired after ten minutes (if you're not bored to tears before that). Can you imagine in a game that requires a character to jump, having to jerk the oontroller upwards every two seconds?!..imagine a game like Mario -ridiculous.

lol omg the first guy 2 leave a comment here said something about the delay... there is hardly even a delay. Its the same controller with this added onto it why are ppl crying its been made a better product... how much ppl have the funnest time of their life with vibration (cough) (cough)

To the sony haters:
What don't you understand about technology? Had this idea, or technology, really been solely Nintendo's, they would have patened it. There is really no way to know when the first person thought to make the controller funtion in real time/space, but the ability to make it happen is only now a reality. Sony copied nintendo like nintendo copied atari; innovation is the same as stealing.
Consoles sold in the US:
PS2: 33.3 Million (56% market share)
Xbox: 14 Million
Gamecube: 11 Million
Xbox 360: 1.2 Million
Countdown to the end of 360: 187 days

There should be a question mark at the end of that last sentence.
"innovation is the same as stealing?"

Man you people are retarded, just be glad they have started to make different ways to play the same old games, inovation is a must to keep us interested otherwise we'd still be playing ataris. Any new idea is good news for everyone.

How can you ignorant imbeciles claim Sony stole the controller idea fron Nintendo when Nintendo stole it from Logitech? So are you also going to attack Nintendo for ripping off the idea of using round silver discs as media?

This is innovation in the wrong area -concentrate on the games themselves.

Cory once again you are wrong! Nintendo only used what atari had (what little it did) because Atari went under!!!
Atari basically handed over what they had to Nintendo because they flooded the market with worthless games! And you are right,,they aren't taking nintendo' design, they're taking the idea and making shit with it! I can't wait untill you're pissing and moaning because something on some game pissed you off and you threw a controller (as all of us have, whether it be from joy or grief) and that stupid sensor gets f'ed up and your buying a $40 controler to add to your $600+ price tag.
People just stop complaining about the PS3 stealing the WII controler(which is a gay name btw) because everyone will turn that feature off after the first hour because thats all it is, a little filler to try and steal the market. (which will never happen with a $600 price tag, because I doubt a parent would spend $600 when they will be able to buy the 360 and Wii for cheaper come X-mas)

Yeah N8DOGG... I agree with the fact that inovation is a must have and new ideas are good news for everyone... But in this case Sony just showed that they were desperate to steal Nintendo´s Thunder... That isnt any inovation at all... Motion caption controllers are quite old... Check out the powerglove for the nes... Not that it was comfortable to use but its a similar technology and its 20 years old... Or even some videos here in "techeblog" showing some videos with controllers that have motion sensors... So Sony didnt show anything new... I can imagine someone inside Sony:
"Well... Since we cant put the Rumble feature in our controller what shall we do?
-How about some motion sensor? We do a little diferent, give a diferent name and call it our own innovation... People are stupid they wont even make any conections..."
Yeah right...
Anyway... I am really thinking that this "6 degrees of freedom" thing in the new controller will be left behind... Its useless in FPS since you cant aim and probably be even worse to aim if you tilt it... And I doubt that people will use the new feature in Gran Turinsmo or other driving games... Sony came up with this idea too late and a lot of games (well... All of them except Warhawk) dont support this new feature... If sony wants to make money they better have a plan B for 2007 and forward...

why would they stick with the same design as the ps2 controller
it feels like youre holding a brick with buttons, and you have to flex your hands to even hold it
i like the xbox controllers because your hands can hold it in a relaxed state

Nintendo stole absolutely zero ideas. Sony is using the tired old gyroscope technology, the one you've been talking about, to sense motion, this is what we've seen before. Nintendo produced an entirely new technology that allows the system to be fully aware of the controller's position in a 3D space, by using sensors interacting with the sensor bar. This does allow for functionality that is provided by a gyroscope, but it also allows for the pointing function and cursor-like function that the gyroscope does not provide. Nintendo saw the gyroscope and wanted more, they built on the idea, but Sony, being the dumbest company of the three, could not think of anything and stuck in the old tech that they know about.

Thank you Jay K.
BTW, rock. I doubt the event in which you've described is likely. I'm not the emotionaly type that tosses their controller when they don't perform well, or perform too well, but I can understand your point. But that is likely to occur with any technology you hold in your hand, regardless of the system. I wouldn't throw my PSP to the ground, nor my laptop, nor cell phone, nor my iPod, nor television. That's just not a smart decision no matter what you're carrying. The thing I'm least likely to toss in an emotional state...this beer.

Can I just point out another thing. Ignoring the fact that Nintendo did not even invent "that" controller idea (get over it), do we know for a fact that Nintendo developed theirs before Sony? Or is it just a case of Nintendo fanboys thinking that because the Wee's was ANNOUNCED first then it simply must have been DEVELOPED first?
PS I'd rather control Raikkonen's F1 car at Monaco than a child's go-kart "driven" by a tired old plumber round a cartoon track.
