Electromagnetic Railgun

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) has successfully test fired “Blitzer”, an electromagnetic railgun capable of shooting metal projectiles at Mach 6, or more than 30,000 times the force of gravity. This weapon works by utilizing powerful rail-like electromagnets to create magnetic fields inside the chamber that drive the projectile before unleashing it at incredible speeds. “And the electromagnetic force generated can be adjusted, depending on the range of the target. The advanced military technology would mean that, in practice, projectiles could hit speeds equivalent to more than 4,500 miles per hour on leaving the chamber, super-heating the air in front of them and generating a sonic boom as it smashes through the sound barrier,” reports Mail Online.
