One of our readers just sent in a video of an early Windows Longhorn concept from 2003. This is definitely what Vista should have been like. For those in the beta, what do all think? Video after the jump.
Very interesting and cool.
I think longhorn concept from 2003 are better then windows vista.
That´s so much interative, animated, and look´s fun.
Whatever, windows vista has somekind of concept mixing windows longhorn with new tecnologies from the moment.

its scary how much RAM all the new visual effect use, i run 1 gig of DDR2 RAM and it (windows vista beta 3) about 60% on average running, with all the bells and whistles (though it cane asilly be reduced)

Honestly, all those visual embellishments are lovely, but they kill your performance. First thing I disable on a new OS.
Pretty, but useless.

Well I love the idea of this, and the new vista also looks great... but what happens when I want really good performance on my semi old p4 3.2ghz 2 gigs ram, x800xt video card... well i will probably have to turn all the nice aero effects off or tone them right down. Then what do you have? Probably a nice looking version of windows xp?

Vista is not that far away from that video...

@Aaron, I don't understand why. Linux can do it all on my pc with a simple 16MB 3D card, a Pentium3 and 512MB of ram. No performance hit.

October 2003 was a pretty lofty goal considering XP had barely even been out two full years at that point.
Now, more than 3 years after that goal, they're still not done with Vista. I guess it's that whole pesky security thing that they never addressed before.

Hmmmm, if they combined the current vista with some of the features of that version, it make for an amazing OS. However, I like the current color scheme much better then that weird blue.
I ran Vista at max settings and it used about 50% of my gig of ram. However, it looked great doing it. There are some people who prefer minimal graphics, but hey, the eye candy made me happy. So I left it on.

@Aaron: Vista is designed to load as much as itself into ram as it can (essentially free ram is wasted ram). If you go and start up a program that needs some of that ram, Vista will immediately release this. Its called Superfetch.
So although Vista appears to be more memory-hungry (and it certainly is), its not as bad as the task manger says.

that looked SOOO much better than Vista!
Oh, anyone notice how they forgot to put Windows ME into the list at the beginning? Now doesn't that say quite a bit about that mistake?

I'm running Windows Vista RC2 now, and like another commenter said, that video really isn't that far off. The video spends almost the entire time showing off flashy transitions and animations, most of which have been cut from Vista, but I'm glad of it. If I wanted to waste time watching window transitions I'd use Mac OS X. Thankfully Microsoft still knows what it means to make an operating system that will work for you, not just entertain you so you don't realize how pointless it is. Also, the Aero Glass interface looks much nicer than the window design featured in this video, so that's a plus.
So the only thing I'm sad about missing in Windows Vista that was in the initial conception is the WinFS file system, but that will have to wait for the next edition of Windows I suppose.

That is impressively better than what I've seen of Vista - eye candy isn't everything, but like good architecture it can make your everyday computing experience more enjoyable - particularly when browsing visual media (photos/videos) or media that you can associate imagery with (e.g. Albums)

Ehh, it's really nothing special. I don't know why excessive animations are so important to people. The capabilities are still there, MS just took most of that animation out because it serves no purpose and does nothing but distract.
Also, the music in this video is incredibly annoying. Man I hate that song...

Yes that did look quite nice with the photo interface, and the universel widget bar on the right.
I personally tried using Vista RC2 64 bit, and the errors were too constant for normal use, I had to fall back to my xp x64.
