Windows Vista Voice Recognition Gone Wrong

Windows Vista product manager Shanen Boettcher recently showcased the OS's "Voice Recognition" technology at Microsoft’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting and it didn't quite work as planned. Video after the jump.
Several tries at making the computer understand the simple salutation “Dear Mom” was read by Microsoft software as “Dear Aunt, let’s set so double the killer delete select all.” Attempts to correct or undo or delete the error only deepened the mess

hehe, at least they tried... i don't think voice recognition has come far enough yet to let you throw out the good old keyboard :) UnitZero: And a mac can't do this eigther :P Maybe some 3rd party software will get it right at some point, but that won't have anything to do with the operating system... ;)

hah, I agree with Julius.

[...] Check out this article and the accompanying video of a Windows Vista voice recognition demo gone wrong. Ambient noise? I don’t think so. [...]

You're right UnitZero, Apple voice recognition will probably be as good as their handwriting recognition was on the Newton... *sarcasm*
7
methinks UnitZero needs to undergo some de-brainwashing.

Doctor's have been using much better software for some time now. Microsoft is unreliable, period.

Ya know, if mac didnt change their marketing skills to target the "HIP" twenty somthings, there would be still a huge PC market. Still i will not touch a mac, unless paid to do so and ipod is that of crap, also because our teenagers are all wanting the trend. And that mac and PC commercial, just gay. my pc will always out perform the best mac. end of story. yay

Hey! I have an idea! Learn to type fast enough, and just do it that way... it's more accurate, less strenuous, and less time consuming because you don't have to go back and erase errors from the dumb speech recognition software. Personally, I wouldn't want to sit at my computer and talk for about two hours straight to get a report or something done, my mouth would be very tired. Anybody who wants to use a computer should be required to use some typing tutor software to get them up to speed.

Microsoft should be focusing on getting a modern operating system out to the public, why waste time on something someone else did better.

That's amazing... ly bad. I tried out voice reconition in the early 90s and it was EXACTLY the same as that demo.

[...] A little while ago, MSNBC posted a review of Windows Vista Speech Recognition program saying it was a disaster (see: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/windows-vista-voice-recognition-gone-wrong ). It noted it was a “wreck” and didn’t work out as well as Microsoft said it would. Contrary to this, Long Zheng of istartedsomething states that it actually works “quite well.”           “I got my hands on the July CTP build (5427) of Windows Vista and gave it a try, and I recorded what I found. I used the internal microphone array in my laptop, so the sound quality is not optimal but Vista handled it well.”Find out for yourself after the jump (video).  [...]
