At first glance, this may appear to be someone scooping real fish out from a bucket, but upon closer inspection, you’ll see that this is all an elaborate illusion. Simply put, Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori uses a combination of paint and layers of resin to pull off this illusion; “his artworks look more like photos of actual fish swimming peacefully in their little tanks.” Continue reading for a video, more pictures, and additional information.

Cast in a variety of vessels, from large sushi vessels, to small bowls and even a hollow bamboo stick, Riusuke’s goldfish look so shockingly real it’s hard to believe they started out as abstract color stains.
