This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro started out as a factory spec vehicle until 1987, when a few auto enthusiasts decided to drop in a race-spec Lingenfelter V8 engine to race in the La Carrera Classica. Unfortunately, it was totaled, but then reborn as the “Big Red Camaro” with a 540-cubic-inch (8.8-liter) Donovan block generating 850 horsepower. It was then upgraded to a 598 cubic-inch (9.8-liter) Brodix block making 1,300 horsepower before its current supercharged iteration generating 1,900 horsepower. Read more to see it hit 216 mph at the drag strip.
Its 555-cubic-inch (9.1-liter) all-aluminum ProCharger supercharged V8 engine now makes over 1,900 horsepower running on a methanol-gas mixture, complete with a massive wing that provides 1,500-pounds of downforce. The team hopes to eventually break the 220-mph barrier over the half-mile after managing to hit 216.34 mph. They ran into a fuel leak issue, which prevented them from a final run.
