Caltech Space Solar Power Project
There’s solar-powered headphones, and soon, Caltech’s Space Solar Power Project (SSPP), which aims to provide a global supply of clean and affordable energy. It would consist of a constellation of modular spacecraft designed to collect sunlight, transform it into electricity, and then wirelessly transmit the power to wherever it is needed.

When deployed, there would be an array of 4-inch-by-4-inch tiles that weighs less than a tenth of an ounce each. Over 100,000+ of these tiles would be combined into a system of flying carpet-like satellites that, once unfurled, would create a sunlight-collecting surface that measures 3.5 square miles. Caltech researchers are planning to launch prototypes into space by December 2022.
