At first glance, this looks like a medieval / fantasy tavern diorama, but at the push of a button, it becomes a fully-functional computer. This PC enclosure was entirely handmade, including the plywood walls, wooden beams, foam steps, a bag of gravel for the bricks, paint, and lots of glue. Scientists from Stanford University, Google Quantum AI, the Max Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems and Oxford University are using Google’s Sycamore quantum computing hardware to create time crystals. For those unfamiliar with time crystals, they are both stable and ever-changing, with special moments that come at periodic intervals in time. They are placed in a new category of phases of matter. Scientists have discovered around 400 Jupiter-like exoplanets to date, but none like TOI-2109b. This gas giant has approximately five times Jupiter’s mass and orbits its star in a mere 16 hours. Officially the second hottest exoplanet detected so far, it has an extremely tight orbit and its day side is estimated to be at around 3,500 Kelvin, or close to 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Baljenac is one tiny island you may have never heard of, but once you spot this landmass in the Adriatic Sea, located just off the coast of Croatia on the Sibenik archipelago, you’ll probably never forget it. Why? It’s been nicknamed “fingerprint island,” and rightfully so. Texas-based Hennessey unveiled Project Deep Space this week, and it’s touted as the world’s first six-wheel-drive electric Hyper-GT. At $3-million USD, this grand tourer is capable of transporting four adults in pure comfort, along with plenty of storage for luggage. Thanks to its unique six-wheel drive powertrain, the vehicle boasts a 50 percent increase in surface contact over traditional four-wheeled vehicles. Read more for a video and additional information.
Princeton University and the University of Washington researchers have developed an ultracompact camera that is just slightly larger than a coarse grain of salt, thanks to a technology called a metasurface. The latter is essentially studded with 1.6 million cylindrical posts and can be manufactured just like a computer chip. Despite its size, this camera is still capable of producing full-color images that match conventional compound camera lenses 500,000 times larger in volume. Read more for another picture and a bonus.
The BMW Concept XM will be the first electrified high-performance model in the BMW M portfolio to date. It’s powered by the M Hybrid drive system, which combines a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a high-performance electric motor for a combined output of 750 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque. On a full charge, you can expect 50-miles of electric range. Aesthetically, it features illuminated grille frames up front with slim LED headlights and large 14-spoke, 23-inch wheels. Switzerland-based WayRay’s Holograktor shows what the future of autonomous ride hailing vehicles could be like, and it’s touted as the first to integrate holographic 3D augmented reality technology. In other words, this vehicle has the ability to render information in real-time around the car, whether it be traffic, weather, etc. This could also open up a way for companies to advertise as well, cutting down ride sharing costs in the process.
