DreamWorks Animation MoonRay Renderer Open Source
DreamWorks Animation announced this week that their proprietary MoonRay renderer will be released as open source software later this year. This production renderer has been used on feature films like How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Croods: A New Age, The Bad Guys, as well as the highly anticipated Puss In Boots: The Last Wish hitting theaters on December 21, 2022.

The MoonRay renderer uses DreamWorks’ distributed computation framework, Arras, which will also to be included in the open source code base. This provides users with innovative multi-machine and multi-context support. Thanks to multi-machine rendering, the interactive display for the artist will be sped up, thus decoupling rendering from the interactive tool which increases interactive robustness. However, you won’t need the MoonRay renderer to view this actual Spanish town covered in sea foam.

We are thrilled to share with the industry over 10 years of innovation and development on MoonRay’s vectorized, threaded, parallel, and distributed code base. The appetite for rendering at scale grows each year, and MoonRay is set to meet that need. We expect to see the code base grow stronger with community involvement as DreamWorks continues to demonstrate our commitment to open source,” said Andrew Pearce, Vice President of Global Technology at DreamWorks.
