5. Kingda Ka

Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure is currently one of the world’s tallest and fastest steel roller coasters. Costing a hefty $25-million to build, it goes from 0-128mph in just 3.5-seconds (1.67g’s) — powered by a 20800 horsepower hydraulic launch motor — and the steel track peaks at a daunting 456-feet.

4. Formula Rossa

You haven’t seen a fast roller coaster, until you’ve seen Ferrari World’s Formula Rossa. This attractions rockets its passengers to speeds in excess of 140MPH over a 1.2-mile track. Oh, and did we mention it was built above Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 track? Well, it is. It’s the star piece for the “Ferrari World” theme park.

3. Mieders Alpine Coaster

Though not exactly a homemade roller coaster, the Mieders Alpine Coaster does take the award for world’s scariest, as the brakes are optional. Put simply, “you reach the summit via a cable car and then sit on a small car with a brake lever and off you go.”

2. Vanish

Unlike other roller coasters, Vanish in Yokohama, Japan features a 744m track that leads to an underwater tunnel. It opened in 1999 and reaches a maximum height of 35m. This roller coaster has two trains, each with six cars. Each car can hold up to four people (two rows of two), and thankfully a shoulder restraint system is used.

1. Takabisha: The World’s Steepest Roller Coaster

You haven’t rode a scary roller coaster, until you’ve experienced Takabisha. This beast is essentially a “Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter steel roller coaster located at the Fuji-Q Highland theme park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan; it received worldwide media attention when it opened due to it having a drop angle of 121-degrees.
