Seagate has just unveiled a new 750GB external hard drive — based on the Barracuda 7200.10 — that runs at 7,200rpm and offers 16MB of cache memory. This pushbutton back-up HDD has an average latency of 4.2ms, integrates both USB/Firewire connectors, and ships with PC/Mac software “that will automatically back up the host computer’s hard drive when the button on the front of the external unit is pressed”. It goes on sale next month (May) and will cost $559.
It contains four platters accessed using eight read and write heads. The capacity arises from the use of perpendicular recording to boost each platter’s capacity to 188GB.
