The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) plan to use Gravity Industries’ Jet Suit for actual search and rescue missions possibly as early as this summer. The concept of using this jet-powered device is similar to a paramedic on a motorbike, which enables them to treat the person on scene or arrange for transportation to a hospital. This will most likely be used for stranded hikers and / or mountain climbers.
Invented by Richard Browning, the Jet Suit is powered by five mini jet engines, with two worn on each hand, while another is built directly into a backpack. At full power, it can achieve a top speed of 85 mph, with a total flight time of up to 10-minutes. During testing, Browning was able to land at the top of a 3,117-foot peak in the Helvellyn mountains after just 8-minutes.

There’s still a lot to work out. Safety is key, and myself and the other paramedics training need to make sure we’re capable. Maybe in the summer, we might make that first flight to somebody in need. What we’re really improving here with this equipment, is the time in which we get a highly qualified paramedic to the patient’s side, not getting the patient to the hospital,” said GNAAS.
