Seiko Ruputer Smartwatch
Long before the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch, there was the Seiko Ruputer, one of the earliest smartwatches released to the public. Unveiled on April 9, 1998, the Ruputer features a 16-bit, 3.6 MHz processor and 512 KB of non-volatile storage memory (including 128 KB of RAM) with options to upgrade to 2MB or 4MB.

The built-in LED display (102 x 64 pixels) is monochromatic, and data was inputted using a small 8-direction joystick or the 6 data buttons. Its two watch batteries provided enough power for 30 hours of continuous use. The smartwatch included software development kit that allowed programmers to personalize the device using programming language C. In the US, Ruputer was repackaged by Matsucom and called the OnHand, loaded with the W-PS-DOS v 1.16 operating system and both an icon-based GUI and text based user interface.

I had two of these a few years back and cost me less than £20 for both. Interesting watch and easy to upload programs but the joystick’s failed on both. I sold them on. Not seen any others for sale,” said one commenter.
