At first glance, this appears to be an image from an apartment listing, but it’s just “Unreal Paris,” a portfolio-builder from level designer Dereau Benoit. While this Unreal Engine 4 tech demo doesn’t use many particle effects and cityscapes, it does however manage to capture the reflection of sun off a kitchen counter as well as the shadows falling across the rough fabric of a couch. To accomplish this, Benoit sourced high-quality textures from elsewhere, and then used Unreal’s manifold lighting options to create the lifelike apartment. Even trained professionals should not attempt to kiss a bear, but Russian photographer Darya Kondratyeva decided that using computer-generated graphics just wouldn’t cut it. So, she creates fantastical photos that bring old fairytales or legends to life, using real animals and models. The scene above looks like it could be straight from a real-life Skyrim movie, or so we think. Continue reading for more.
Visual effects are often integral to a movie’s story and appeal. Although most visual effects work is completed during post-production, it usually must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. Visual effects primarily executed in Post-Production, with the use of multiple tools and technologies such as graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software, while special effects such as explosions and car chases are made on set. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with production and the film’s director design, guide and lead the teams required to achieve the desired effects. Ever wonder what happens when you combine face tracking and projection mapping together in real time? These mind-boggling illusions. By using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. The software can interact with a projector to fit any desired image onto the surface of that object. Click here to view the first image in this week’s WINS gallery. No, the video you are about to see wasn’t rendered by a powerhouse server farm, and most importantly, it’s not a gigantic 20GB+ file. It was generated in real time by a tiny algorithm by demoscene group Mercury. This mind-blowing 64k intro is called The Timeless, and according to Gizmodo, “since the file size is limited to 64 Kilobytes, the graphics and music are all generated algorithmically in real time (procedural generation).” Continue reading for the clip.
No, the room you’re looking at above wasn’t captured by a photographer, but it’s rather a computer-generated image. It was created by the incredible digital artists at Dabarti CGI Studio, and blurs the lines between photo-realistic 3D renderings and reality. Continue reading to see more.
What you’re looking at above is a CG render that simulates every single pore on a real face. USC researchers photographed samples of skin from people’s chins, cheeks and foreheads at a resolution of about 10 micrometres, so that each skin cell was spread across roughly three pixels, using a specially developed lighting system and camera. Hulk and Thor have come a long way since the days when live actors actually had to get in full costume to portray the characters, and the images above prove it. Click here to view the first image in today’s viral picture gallery. Continue reading for the last mega WINS compilation of 2012.
Ever wonder what Iron Man and War Machine look like before they get the computer graphics treatment? Well, the image above shows that Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle wear solid-colored clothing with black & white strips of paper attached for easy chroma keying later on.
