Provided you do the sensible thing and feed the 65PX600 a diet of high definition as often as you can, it’s a simply imperious performer – without doubt the finest screen above 50in we’ve ever seen

TigerDirect provides us with a short hands-on preview of the 19-inch VX1945wm ViewSonic LCD display with integrated iPod dock. It features 1440 x 900 resolution, 5ms response time, 700:1 contrast ratio, 300 nits brightness, and a 160-degree viewing angle. At $3,377, the 50-inch PDP-507XD plasma offers 1366 x 768 native resolution, 4000:1 contrast ratio, 1100cd/m2 brightness, dual HDMI inputs, a built-in digital TV tuner, and 2 x 15W speakers. Here’s the bottom line:

With LCD doing a frighteningly good job of winning over consumer hearts and minds, Pioneer has arguably never needed a truly outstanding plasma TV more than it needs one right now. Just as well, then, that it has delivered the goods in emphatic fashion with the 507XD: a genuine contender for the title of ‘finest mainstream flat TV ever’, and nothing short of a steal at its current asking price

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is a special type of light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive layer comprises a thin-film of certain organic compounds. The emissive electroluminescent layer can include a polymeric substance that allows the deposition of very suitable organic compounds, for example, in rows and columns on a flat carrier by using a simple “printing” method to create a matrix of pixels which can emit different colored light

Viewsonic’s 22-inch VG2230wm offers 1680 x 1050 resolution, 700:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, 280cd/m2 brightness, and 2W x 2 speakers. Product page. Here’s the verdict:

The best 22in screen I’ve seen so far, with generally impressive image quality, and height adjustment, tilt, and rotation. However, it’s more expensive than the competition too but the real problem is that the superb Samsung 215TW is now breathing down its neck in the price department
