Drone Iceland Volcano Melt
Photo credit: AirStock via Peta Pixel
Photographer and founder of AirStock Garðar Ólafs wanted to get some footage of the erupting Geldingadalir volcano, which is 15 minutes from his hometown of Reykjanes, but that is quite the dangerous task to say the least, even for a drone. All was going well until he decided to fly right over the mouth of the fissure, as going around the eruption went perfectly fine. Fortunately, only the light under the drone and sensors were damaged. DJI FPV Drone Iceland Fagradalsfjal Volcano Eruption
Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall volcano, located near Reykjavik, erupted or the first time in over 800 years. Resident Bjorn Steinbekk decided to take his new DJI FPV drone out to the majestic sight to capture some footage, or at least attempt to. Despite the extremely high temperatures (u to 1,250° C), the drone came out unscathed flying over the crather and more. The eruption began in the vicinity of Mount Fagradalasfjal, the westernmost part of the top mountain of the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Drone Mann Movie Theater FPV
H/t: The Verge
With some states reopening movie theaters, it’s only fitting that an incredibly skilled drone pilot film an FPV adventure to remind people what they’ve been missing out on this past year. Filmed by SkyCandy, this one-take clip was captured at Mann theaters’ Plymouth Grand in Plymouth, Minnesota and filmed using a DJI Air Unit as well as a Rotor Riot Cinewhoop. It starts from the outside before swooping into the lobby and concession stand.

Drone Bowling Alley
Tracking shots refer to any shot where the camera follows backward, forward or moves alongside the subject being recorded. In the film industry, the camera is typically mounted on a dolly that is then placed on rails, while a handheld steadycam or gimbal may also be used for smaller scale productions. The camera is then pushed along the track during filming of the scene or moved manually when using a handheld rig.

Kelley Aerospace Arrow Supersonic Combat Drone
Kelley Aerospace unveiled Arrow earlier this week, their supersonic unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) concept. To date, the company claims to have already received 100 “pre-orders” for the drone, which will be manufactured at their facility in Singpaore’s Seletar Aerospace Park. In addition to its swarm and autonomous aerial flight logic, the aircraft boasts a carbon fiber monocoque, enabling it to fly for more than 2,600 Nm (4,800 km) with a maximum payload of 37,038 lbs (16,800 kg).

DJI First-Person View Combo Drone Unboxing
Dominion Drones managed to get their hands on a pre-production unit of DJI’s upcoming FPV Combo Drone, and it looks amazing to say the least. Before they even open up the box, you’re able to clearly see the words “Not for Sale” and “Display Demo” marked on it, but that’s only because the packaging itself might change before its rumored March launch. One the drone itself, you see a set of cameras facing the front and downward positions, most likely used to avoid obstacles. Read more for the video.

MIT LaserFactory Robot Drone
Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed LaserFactory, an innovative system capable of printing functional, custom-made devices and robots, all without human intervention. It’s a three part system that allows users to create structural geometry, print traces, and assemble electronic components like sensors as well as actuators. To create a drone, a user would first design it by placing components from a parts library and then draw on circuit traces, which are the copper or aluminum lines on a printed circuit board that allow electricity to flow between electronic components.
