Microsoft has been ordered to pay i4i $290-million after losing an appeal to strip Word’s custom-XML editor. The only other option for Microsoft was to stop selling Word completely. According to a representative: “after its effective date, the injunction prohibits Microsoft from selling, offering to sell, importing, or using copies of Word with the infringing custom XML editor.”

The company sued Microsoft in March 2007, alleging the software superpower willingly infringed on a 1998 i4i patent by building a method of processing custom XML into one of Microsoft’s biggest cash cows, starting with Word 2003.

A Mintpass designer turned to Windows XP and Mac OS for inspiration and came up with these nifty OS Calculators. Yes, the “Windows calculator sports the classic XP color scheme, and even has menu headers.” More pictures after the break.

The designer is aware of the fact that it would be unlikely for either Apple or Microsoft to let any third party get away with making these calculators, so is leaving it up to the two computer makers to make real-life versions of their OS calculators.

Microsoft announced today that it has just cut 800 jobs worldwide, with most positions being at their Seattle office. On the bright side, “Microsoft has continued to hire in some areas even as it has cut back in others, reducing the net effect of the job reductions.” Continue reading to see the humorous side of Microsoft.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had said in May that the company was almost, but not quite completely, finished with the planned 5,000 job cuts at that point.
