The Xiaomi Mi 9 is set to be officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona next week, and we already got a sneak peek at the Explorer Edition’s transparent back, but the visible parts aren’t what you think. According to company chief Lei Jun, the components are all etched onto a 0.3mm aluminum sheet using a CNC machine.
Aside from explaining the process, Jun also revealed that the smartphone will be equipped with a 7-piece lens, 48-megapixel rear AI-powered camera that features an f/1.47 aperture and 12GB of RAM. Similar to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, the faux board comes with a prominent shoutout to Qualcomm, though it does have other written elements, including “Battle Angel,” “Mi Fans” and “Super Mi.” What you may not know is that the aluminum sheet also acts as a heat sink, so it’s not purely a visual element.
