VoloCopter VoloCity Electric Flying Taxi Full-Sized Prototype Maiden Flight
The Volocopter VoloCity, the company’s latest full-sized electric flying taxi prototype, has just completed its maiden flight and well on its way to getting certified in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. That’s right, Volocopter hopes to achieve European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for its two-seat VoloCity multicopter, which has 18-rotors and 18 electric motors, all powered by nine lithium-ion battery packs. Read more for the video and additional information.

VoloCity will have a range of up to 22-miles when fully charged and maximum airspeed of 68 miles per hour, making it perfect for short city trips between various venues. Rather than rely on slow charging methods, Volocopter says that VoloCity’s batteries can be replaced in just 5-minutes at a swapping station. In the past decade, Volocopter has completed over 1,500 test flights with smaller prototypes. On a related note, it may be years until we see something as advanced as the Luxoft HALO robo-taxi.

VoloCopter VoloCity Electric Flying Taxi Full-Sized Prototype Maiden Flight

As the rotors began to turn and a light humming filled the air, the flick of a remote switch caused the VoloCity to take off and perform its maiden flight in Bruchsal, southern Germany. Once in the air, the term “air taxi” quite literally became next-level! The airborne VoloCity was much more than an innovative aircraft – it was the culmination of the Volocopter team’s hard work and dedication, and its success in bringing this novel technology to life,” said the company.
