Most sandboxes are designed purely for the entertainment of children, but this one is not. Utilizing a setup that consists of a Microsoft Kinect 3D camera, a data projector and simulation and visualization software for the lava and water flow, researchers have developed a high-tech sandbox that lets you interactive landscapes. It’s called SandyStation – developed by researchers in the Czech Republic – and the software powering it is based on the Vrui VR development toolkit as well as the Kinect 3D video processing framework.
