If Fritz Lang of ‘Metropolis’ fame made ‘Blade Runner‘ in 1929, this is what it might look like, or at least according to artificial intelligence. This version of the film follows the original, but instead of Rick Deckard, we have John Rynehart, a former police officer whose job is to hunt down replicants.
It also appears to take place in New York City rather than Los Angeles, with its towering skyscrapers and oppressive architecture that reflect the character’s struggles as well as the dehumanizing effects of industrialization. The line between man and machine blurs, causing Rynehart to question humanity, along with the nature of empathy. It wouldn’t be a Fritz Lang film without themes of identity, societal divisions and the struggle for freedom against authoritarian control.
