A haunting spire of cold gas and dust was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in the Eagle Nebula, also known as M16. Spanning approximately 9.5 light-years, this menacing tower is approximately twice as tall as the distance between our Sun and the next nearest star
What you can’t see are the stars forming inside this tower of gas and dust. This is made possible by the creation by dense gas collapsing under gravity or due to pressure from gas heated by neighboring hot stars. The Eagle Nebula itself is located around 6,500–7,000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Serpens.

Stretching roughly 4 to 5 light-years, the Pillars of Creation are a fascinating but relatively small feature of the entire Eagle Nebula, which spans 70 by 55 light-years,” said NASA.
