Butterfly Turtle Tears

Being able to capture a butterfly resting on another animal is an incredible feat already, but this perfectly timed photo, captured in Ecuador, shows a pair of Julia Butterflies drinking tears from the eyes of two turtles. Scientifically speaking, “tear-feeding” is referred to as “lachryphagy” in nature, and by the looks of things, the turtles are used to it. Teens Make Fun of Home

Railroad track inspector Josh Cyganik of Union Pacific was at work one day, when he heard a few local teens making rude remarks about 75-year-old Leonard Bullock’s home. So, he decided to use the power of social media to spread the word, and the rest is history. “I stopped counting at 95 volunteers, but everyone showed up excited and willing to help. People came from as far as Texas, Washington, and California to help out. According to the media, I’m a hero. I’m not a hero, I just heard something that bothered me,” said Cyganik. Sky Ladder Firework

They 1,650-foot Sky Ladder appears to defy gravity at first, but it’s just a clever illusion consisting of fireworks that stretch right up into the sky in Quanzhou, south-eastern China. It’s the work of Cai Guoqiang, an artist who is originally from the city and now based in New York. The ladder, made of metal wire and aluminum, was filled with gunpowder and then attached to the bottom of a hot air balloon launched from a boat off the shore of nearby Huiyu Island. Baby and Bulldog Born Same Day

Ivette Ivens, a 25-year-old mother from Chicago, saw a French bulldog puppy – whom she later named Farley – that was born on the same day as her baby son Dilan about 8-months ago, she knew it was a sign. “I saw Farley’s birth date and just knew it’s meant. I’m pretty sure Dilan thinks they’re both the same species, as they walk at the same level and are both going through the stage of chewing on everything,” said Ivens. PHASR Rifle

The PHASR (Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response) rifle is a prototype non-lethal laser dazzler developed by the U.S. Department of Defense at Kirtland Air Force Base, part of the Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate in New Mexico. It uses a low-intensity laser and a two-wavelength laser to temporarily disorient and blind a target. Blinding laser weapons have been tested in the past, but were banned under the 1995 UN Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons, which the United States acceded to on January, 21 2009. Lightning Bolt Rainbow

Greg McCown, a Tucson, Arizona-based photography enthusiast, recently captured the shot of a lifetime when a lightning strike appeared directly in front of a rainbow while shooting landscapes near the small town of Marana, Arizona, McCown. “After years of trying I finally got my lightning and rainbow picture. This was the last bolt to strike before the storm dissipated into nothing,” said McCown. The equipment used included a Nikon D600 (f/8, ISO 50, 1/125, and 28mm settings), a Nikkor 28-80mm lens, a tripod, and a AEO Micro 4.0 lightning trigger. Los Angeles Reservoir Black Balls

This isn’t a prank, Los Angeles has turned to more unusual methods to protect the city’s water from the drought. This week, they released 96-million floating shade balls, designed to help protect the water against dust, rain, chemicals and wildlife, as well as prevent 300 million gallons of water from evaporating each year, into the 75-acre Los Angeles Reservoir in Sylmar, California.
