Here’s a first look at the Google Android OS in the wild, running on an HTC prototype phone. For those who don’t know what Google Android is, then continue reading for a video explaining the open source software.

Even in early form, it’s light and fast, much faster than the desktop emulator at times. And as a long time programmer, he think it’s a lot more put together than Window Mobile 5 on the back side of things. It’s a prototype so things will obviously change, but these are all great signs

So you’ve seen the video (below), now check out these screenshots of Google’s Android user interface, which looks quite interesting to say the least. Though it may not look like anything special, this software will surely get massive support from developers for being open source. Click here for more pictures.

There’s a browser (no flash, but still better than the shipping Windows Mobile browser), address book, maps. Missing are YouTube, Gmail and Calendar apps. There’s also a coverflow and grid type view for photos

In this clip, “Sergey Brin and Steve Horowitz discuss the availability of the SDK, that it will be open source in the future, and demo applications on the Android platform.” Video after the jump.

The former shows off text messaging and Google maps (which looks pretty great, btw), and the latter shows off 3G desktop-quality web browsing using webkit. There’s also 3D OpenGL rendering, application feature sharing, and iPhone-esque finger gesturing
