Technophone PC105 Cell Phone 1985
The Technophone PC105 is claimed to be the world’s first pocket-sized cell phone and was released in 1985. Initial design work started back in 1983, but real development didn’t start until 1985 led by Technophone founder Nils Martensson. It took several years to refine since the components had to designed from scratch to ensure the most compact final form.

Hardware components included an eight layer circuit board, integrated battery cells co-designed with Sanyo / Panasonic to be as thin as possible, and a flat soft membrane keypad using the same technology as the Sinclair ZX81 computer. During the mid 1980s, Stanford Research Institute determined that the US market had the potential for 30,000 mobile phones by 2000, and it was this report that helped the company raise £3.3 million for the project.
