We have seen the future of artificial intelligence, and it includes an advanced algorithm that can learn to paint in the style of any artist. That’s right, researchers at the University of Tubingen inserted series of old masters into the system, and it turned a modern day photo into paintings in the style of some of the world’s best known artists. “Thus far the algorithmic basis of this process is unknown and there exists no artificial system with similar capabilities. Here we introduce an artificial system based on a Deep Neural Network that creates artistic images of high perceptual quality. The system uses neural representations to separate and recombine content and style of arbitrary images, providing a neural algorithm for the creation of artistic images,” said the researchers. Matthew Zeiler, PhD, Founder and CEO of Clarifai Inc, speaks about large convolutional neural networks. These networks have recently demonstrated impressive object recognition performance making real world applications possible.

However, there was no clear understanding of why they perform so well, or how they might be improved.

In this talk, Matt covers a novel visualization technique that gives insight into the function of intermediate feature layers and the operation of the overall classifier.

Used in a diagnostic role, these visualizations allow us to find model architectures that perform exceedingly well.
