Future Weapons: MOAB Bomb

This "Future Weapons" segment focuses on the MOAB (Massive Ordnance Air Blast) bomb, which "weighs 21,000 pounds and carries nine tons of H-6 explosive." Video after the jump.
The MOAB uses a GPS system to guide it to targets, but with a lethal blast radius of 400 feet, it can hardly be considered a precision weapon

A friend of mine worked on the guidance system for MOAB. He kept talking about this project that really compressed for time, and when we saw the "Dynetics" logo on the back we all realized that was what he was talking about. The green MOAB shown in this story is in the spot marked by the green arrow on this link. The MOAB was not on display out there at the time of this Google picture. I believe I felt the shock from the MOAB. If was a noticeable noise where we were (in Niceville, where they showed a picture of a sign just before going into the Black Angus which is actually in Fort Walton Beach. I cannot figure out what town they were referring to.) The shaking was nothing compared to the bunker busters they test out there. One of them made me think the house was going to collapse on top of me and it was detonated 10 miles away. The MOAB is truly a psychological weapon. If every used in combat its effectiveness will not be in the people directly killed by it, but in those for 30 miles around who witness it. The best weapon is one that never has to be used.

I agree with john. This is pretty messed up. What is there to be so proud of? Creating the worlds biggest bomb... yeah... great use of time and money there, now you can go and blow everyone up because some c**k in the whitehouse doesn't like the way they look.

well, as the guy said, its the Mother Of All Bombs, its a technical achievement, though not one that should ever find use in the field.

anyone survives the bomb they get hit on the head by the falling ramp :)

john and grimsy...I know war is wrong but with out it every piece of tech in your homes would not be around... plus if we dont build it then others will....EX> e=mc^2 brought about the atom bomb we were the first to build it but, germany had the idea be for we did

Like it or not war is the fulcrum of history. It is the point about which most everything else turns. Most technological, economic, political, philisophical and social change and advancement either come about because of, or results in, war. Treatments for malaria, computers, aviation, physics, the list is huge.

legend85 and Boogey_Man, those are valid points, however personally, I'm not looking forward to having one of these sitting in my lounge room between my PC and TV.

grimsy, the only way we can stop war and stop us from whiping each other off the map is to have a one world government that abolish war all together.....that will never happen.

I have wondered about the ramp. I wonder if the blast puffs the parachute up a bit.

oke lets 1st make 1 thing clear this piece is design to dig down in to the sand And completlie blow the hell out of a Bunker. or bust strait true Concret Bunkers and than explode. now in the Vietnam war they had something called the daisy Cutter info can be found here : http://www.combatindex.com/hardware/detail/mis/blu-82.html The BLU 82 is even more cruel Why? well its more like a mega Flashbang. it hase a magnesium aluminum Core it explodse about 20feet above the Ground and Completly Whieps out a forest of 800 squere meters. than the blast is so power full that it will suck the brains out of a rabit at 1.5KM away. Now this piece is being used By the USA in Irak and Afganistan and in the Vietnam war.... But back to the video what a piece of bull crap coment at the end. 2days after the Drop of the weapon iraq serenderd. BULL SHIT! thats what i thing america should have cleaned up afganistan cause now our people are cleaning up there (our people=The European people)

...which is a shame. And I'm sure even if there was a single world government, people would still find things to fight about. got religion?
17
I think its a good thing that we have such a weapon to our disposal. It's making the U.S. more stable, with weapons like these the enemy will understand that there basically fighting because they enjoy dying.

moab is not the first bomb of it's size to be dropped, in WW2 the Royal Air Force Droped 2200 lb Tall boy bombs on German Targets they were designed by Barn Wallace who also designed the dam busting bouncing bombs.
