LED Touch Sensor

JustDIY proves that LEDs can be used for more than lighting, but also as an input device. Video clip after the jump.

like this is so old. in the matter of technology. I remember that I had a old player, that plays the big round things, vintage. Any way it had same type of control for all of its butons. And the thing is like 25 years old.

OK, now if that works with O-LED screens, then we've got a cool robust touchscreen.

@kakarot - I think you missed the point of the hack. The guy is investigating the bi-direcitonal properties of LEDs. That is, aparently LEDs can be used to sense when something is near. There's o actual switch or other device next to the LEDs. I'm guessing it's something to do with reflected light changing the state of the diode, but I'm no electronics guy. As p said above if they can get this info out of OLED matricies that's an interesting thought.

Anyone know what effect is actually going on here ? I don't think its the redirection of light back onto the diode. I forget how it works, but I remember that all diodes are emmit light, so they are all technicaly LEDs. But I can't remember if the foward voltage changes when the junction is exposed to light. If it does then I would think that a micro is reading the voltage going to each led and pulling the change. It would have to be one hell of a steady voltage reference tho.

It's interesting how various systems such as electrical current, magnetic flow, and light manipulation can be used in opposing directions to produce an opposite effect. Think: Faraday Principle (electricity and magnetics).
