Toshiba to Launch Gigabeat S on April 28th

Toshiba will launch the Gigabeat S30/S60 -- claimed to be 5th-generation iPod killers -- in Japan on April 28th. Powered by Windows Portable Media Center, the S boasts a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 8 mode equalizer, FM tuner (S60 only), and support for a variety of audio/video formats. Prices will start at $304.

I agree with mizan - Just because apple released the first comercially available high capacity MP3 player (with the idea borrowed from Compaq - using hard drives in PMPs) Overall they are not all they're cracked up to be. BTW this looks like an excellent product and I hope it kills the iPod, buries it, then digs it up again only to run over it in a car and then buried again...... then set on fire

I agree with you all in the technological sense of it all. because this makes MUCH more sense to buy than an iPod. But i dont see the iPod going away anytime soon. And for one reason. Fashon. Im not saying that I agree with it, but it is VERY true that half the reason that anyone buys one is so that other people can see them with it. Its almost like a statement or something. Though it really isnt since most people already have one anyway. I think its an iPods simplistic design (on the outside) that attracts people to them more. its eye candy.

Amnesia i love your thinking, and this has the other advantage of having windows (well a form of windows) installed on it so there bound to be people out there making games and 3rd party software for it, i really have to get this one and plus it looks pretty neat aswell.

I currently have an iPod that is a U2 iPod without color. I obviously need an mp3 upgrade. Should I wait for a touch-screen mp3? Should I just go for the Gigabeat S? Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks...

very cool big screen good interface there are not many that are easy to carry around not the bulky 4.0 screens IPODS ARE NOT THAT GREAT

Amnesia, dude...creative labs came out with the first commercial mp3 players. And yes, ipods are crap...this looks like the first unit i'd pay money for although im holding out for dab radio too

I'm not impressed with my 60GB iPod, I have no end of problems with it. iPod/iTunes doesn't handle multiple genre or multiple artist tracks properly at all, resulting in a usability mess. Since this Toshiba is WMP compatible, I assume those problems would be nonexistent.

I love my ipod. I use it everywhere. We sell the first model gigabeat at my store and people have nothing but complaints about it. Not to mention that there really is no new technology here, so what about it will stop millions of people from buying ipods, the most user friendly mp3 player around. And finally, with the release of the fake sixth generation ipod as being touch screen, apple will be under huge pressure to make the actual 6th gen better than the fake, at the risk of losing the respect of their almost cult like following. Producing these "ipod killers" is merely an exercise of futility.

Thank you, Sausage, for pointing out that Creative Labs came out with the first commercial mp3 players. I had a Creative mp3 player long before anyone was buying, or even hearing about, iPods. I do now own an iPod, but strongly dislike it, for so many reasons, and am just waiting until I can afford to buy a new mp3 player, preferably along the lines of these Toshiba ones.
