Similar to Samsung's $200,000 contraption, this home-built robotic sentry gun is "capable of picking out a human target and can accurately track/shoot him or her in the heart." Videos after the jump.
...there are some pretty good reasons for not building an optical sentry gun, a big one being that it's generally a good idea to shoot down any missile headed in your direction, but that same philosophy may not be the best when applied to humans

Home-Built Robotic Sentry Gun Think of this as a cheaper alternative to the $ 200,000 Samsung Machine gun robot, this home built Sentry gun is capable of tracking down human targets and can shoot the target in the heart. (Video after the jump)...

Home-Built Robotic Sentry Gun Holy fucking crap!

wow that was killer. I have to build something like that. Any I Idea where to look for tracking software.

This is a few years old and you can easily see that it only tracks the white t-shirt. Meaning it will attack any white blob on a non-white background. It's still a cool toy though.

This is one home project I'd definitely look into doing :D

Sooo - you wear a *black* T-shirt and you can sneak past the autosentry? Brilliant. Obviously the aliens in "Aliens" didn't have a ready supply of black T-shirts. It's far easier in a DMZ to shoot pretty much anything that moves, then ask questions later - so simply compare three video frames and look for any differences (two reference frames that should be 'identical' and the target frame). Any differences - shoot it.

Unreal! Who ever created this should take it to market. I'm sure they could sell this idea to gun shops, etc.

I could do with one of these at my house, it would no doubt help keep the door to door salesmen at bay.

Thats pretty sweet - could get a bit chaotic if too many people started setting them up! Then there's already plenty of viruses/trojans targeting webcams and other peripherals, better watch out if they're online ;)

A bunch of people noted that it just tracks the white tee-shirt. Okay, now what color does heat show up as on an infrared camera? ;-)

[...] “Jtkthx” has unveiled a new version of his home-built robotic sentry gun. Video after the jump. A webcam first takes a picture of the environment in front of the tripod. A computer running Java then interprets that image, deciding on a target. Based on predictions of movement and servo calibrations, the computer sends a signal to a Phidget servo controller, which then moves the four servos attached to an Airsoft mini MP5. Servo 0 is the X (or pan, yaw, whichever you prefer), servos 1 and 2 are the Y (or pitch, or tilt), and servo 3 pulls the trigger [...]
