Researchers in Japan have developed the world's first two-wheel drive bicycle, which "comes with an extra chain mechanism to transfer power from the bicycle’s pedals to both wheels instead of just one." Video after the jump.
I'm a great believer in the engineer’s inate ability to come up with creative and effective solutions to problems. Still, sometimes it’s difficult to figure out exactly what problem they are trying to solve. It looks ‘practical’, whatever that means

does not look practical at all chain jams are tedious, and they are dobuled with this mechanism, anyway... at least someone got the idea and acuatually made it real.
2
haha the guy doesnt even know how to ride a bike. but this invention looks so useless anyways.
3
Awesome! I have to get me one of these bicycles when they come out, hopefully they cost less than a new PS3
4
Looks hard to ride, I'll stick with my normal bicycle for now

I'm not convinced that this is the 'first' 2WD bike. I have magazines that talk about a 2WD mountain bike that used a 'worm drive' shaft to transfer power to the front wheel. Moreover, you could disengage the drive when you weren't using it to eliminate the extra drag.

that bike looks very weak like if you take off a ramp the fork will just bend. if i had a 2wd bike i use it for going through mud, snow going up hill and i don't think that bike is strong enough. it would be harder bike on ice coz both wheels spin no control.

This is definitely not the 1st 2WD drive bike. There were a couple of models available in the mid 90's. Not exactly useful and with some operational quirks (like this one). But claiming to be the 1st over a decade later is a bit weak.
8
does this remind anyone of the chimpokomon episode of southpark?
9
Definitely not the first one. I've seen a few over the years.
10
This isn't a first. 2WD bicycles have been around for years. Just check jeep's website for examples. They don't use an awkward chain system, it's internal shaft drive that can be disengaged.
11
Here's an initial model: link And I saw a newer one earlier this year in Mankato, MN at University Cycle with a very cool drive shaft system.

That shit is just dumb. How stupid looking. If you buy it you are dumb.
13
Def. not the first - Jeep made one years ago. This technology is a huge help for mountain bikes - in many situations two wheel drive is a tremendous help in climbing obstacles.
14
2wheel drive bike designed in Japan. A few models have been around before. Here is yet another of a new 2wheel drive bicycle that engineers in Japan have developed.

Wow, a 2WD bike riden by a guy in a suit with white socks. Now that is a world's first!! Steve
16
this is not the first.
17
This of course begs the question: what was wrong with a single wheel drive?
18
I'd rather ride Sola Aoi

Why didn't they get someone that could actually ride a bike?

Interesting idea.. but i don't see the point in it.
