Nintendo Switch 20.0 Update Virtual Game Cards
Yes, it’s true that the Nintendo Switch system update version 20.0.0 was released today, and includes features to prepare the first-generation console for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is set to launch on June 5, 2025.

The update brings a few new features, including one made to help move data to the Switch 2. It adds a “System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2” option in System Settings > System. This lets you shift game and system data from your current Switch to a Switch 2. You can do this transfer using local wireless between the original Switch and the Switch 2, but both consoles need to be in the same place and linked to the same Nintendo Account.

If you’re planning to trade in or sell your old Switch before getting a Switch 2, you can upload the transfer data to Nintendo’s special servers. Then, you can download it onto a Switch 2 connected to the same Nintendo Account.

Nintendo Switch 20.0 Update Virtual Game Cards
Update 20.0 also adds a “Virtual Game Cards” system, where digital games, DLC, and some free software you’ve bought are shown as virtual cards in a new HOME Menu list. You can “eject” a virtual game card from one Switch and “insert” it into another Switch with the same Nintendo Account, basically moving the game’s play license.

This works for only two Switch systems at a time. You can also lend virtual game cards to other people in the same Nintendo Account family group, making sharing easier. An “Online License Settings” option lets you play digital games on a secondary Switch when online, even if the virtual game card isn’t loaded.

Nintendo Switch 2 GameShare
We can’t overlook the new GameShare function, which lets a Switch 2 share compatible games with up to three nearby Switch or Switch 2 consoles using local wireless, without each console needing to own the game. It has to be started by a Switch 2 and works with games like Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics.

It’s a lot like the DS Download Play feature from older Nintendo systems. The feature ties in with GameChat, a new Switch 2 communication tool (used with the C-Button on Joy-Con 2 and needing a Nintendo Switch Online subscription after a trial period).
