China showcased their new CR450 high-speed train this past Sunday in Beijing. The prototype is capable of hitting a top speed of 280 mph (450 kph) and boasts a commercial operating speed of 250 mph (400 kph).
The train is touted as being 22% more energy efficient and 10% lighter with a 2-decibel reduction in cabin noise as well as a 4% increase in passenger capacity while traveling on existing high speed rail trunk lines. Commercial operation is expected to begin in 2025, and will reduce the travel time from Beijing to Shanghai to 2.5 hours instead of 4 hours.
